Gamer: Be advised!
Combat in this game is not for the easily frustrated. The average single-enemy fight takes about 5-10 minutes, because the ships are so fast that you only have a split-second to shoot a projectile through a tiny blue target recticle that is constantly bobbing and weaving. At higher levels, it is just utterly impossible to kill an enemy with guns. You end up exhausting your supply of missles, and sometimes that doesn't even do it.
Here's some tips for combat: 1. Get wingmen. If anything, they will draw fire. Be sure to upgrade them as you level. Also, do NOT take them into dense asteroid fields. They will die.If you are going to mine, tell them to stay-put before you enter the asteroid field. 2. The Y button is your friend. This is the EMP switch. It will peel-off a layer of your shields and expel it out into an EMP pulse that destroys incoming missles. When you see the "incoming missle" warning, there is a red, numerical readout in your HUD that tells you the range of the inbound. Wait until it is under 1000 then hit it. 3. Don't go crazy with upgrades until you are comfortable shooting lowbies. The game scales enemies based on your upgrades, not your XP. So, you'll be facing level 30 enemies at level 4 if you jack-up your weapons and shields to high levels. 4. I find it easier to pick my own battles. Random enemy encounters slow down the game too much since combat is usually long and drawn-out. Therfore, I spend alot of money on diplomacy to make everyone friendly. |
