How do you destroy background blocks?

I'm trying to build a basement/mine and I want to replace the back with stone or wood, problem is I can't remove the background dirt tiles. Is there a way to do so?

Make a hammer/mallet

Use a hammer.

You use a hammer, but make sure you destroy any blocks blocking that background. Placing a background takes up about 2x2 tiles, if any tiles are blocking the 2x2 background, you cant destroy it (Thats what i found at least)
