Game Doesn't Run at All

This is the first game I've purchased from Steam that refused to run. I guess I should consider myself fortunate, but I'm still frustrated.

Click "Play" and Steam reports that it is "Preparing to launch...", but then the pop-up goes away and nothing happens.

Removed/reinstalled. No change.

Specs:
Windows 7 (64 bit)
Intel i7/920
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275
6 Gbytes RAM
2 Tbyte HD (lots of space left)

w/typical background applications running.

Go to the game's exe in the steam folder. In its properties set compatibility mode to windows xp sp3.
