Player one can't use a controller?

I wanted to play with a controller but I can't seem to join when I press start as player 1.. My conroller works with dozens of other games, it's the windows xbox360 controller.. any1 else hav this problem?

I'm able to use a game controller as player 1. It is a standard DirectInput gamepad. Works fine. Not an official Xbox 360 one.
