Might be 1 of 2 things....
1. Reinstall (or install) XNA from the game's directory 2. Do you have a non-standard My Docs location? |

I've tried reinstalling the game (4 times), verifying the cache, reinstalling .NET4 then XNA, setting differing compatibility modes for the .exe, and updating my video drivers to the latest version (Nvidia) - all to no avail. =( |

Had the same problem. After trying lots of things, i finally read the following solution somewhere, and it works. It looks like a bit of a hassle, but it comes down to just renaming a few dll's that wont update, and copying in the dll's that are updated. Apparently, if your windows isnt updated to the latest version, then installing framework 4 wont update a few dll's. So this fixes that:
================================================== == 0. Make sure you have installed the framework 4.0 1. Check out the version of mscoree.dll in c:\windows\system32. If it's 2.0.50727.4927, then continue (i had a sligtly different version than the number mentioned here, doesnt really matter) 2. Fiddle with permissions of this dll (Properties>>Security>>Advanced>>Change permissions>>Add>>$$Your user name$$>>OK>>OK>>OK (i skipped this step, wasnt really necessary) 3. Rename it to mscoree.dll.old (If you have a 64bit version of windows then do the same in 1-3 ALSO with c:\windows\syswow64\mscoree.dll) 4. Open the file dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe (download here -> http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...f-b21f31ab88b7 ) with any extractor and extract it to any folder. You can open it with winzip or winrar. 5. Open the folder 6. Find the file netfx_Core.mzz and rename it with netfx_Core.zip and open with extractor 7. Extract the file _003_mscoree_dll_x86 (and if you have a 64bit windows, ALSO the _003_mscoree_dll_amd64) 8a. If u have a 64 bit version of windows: Rename _003_mscoree_dll_amd64 to mscoree.dll and copy it to c:\windows\system32 8b. If u have x86 version: Rename _003_mscoree_dll_x86 to mscoree.dll and copy it to c:\windows\system32 9a. If u have a 64bit of windows: Rename _003_mscoree_dll_x86 to mscoree.dll and copy it to c:\windows\syswow64 10. No restart needed. Just install the x64 prereqs and next visual studio as it was ment to be. 11. Profit ================================================== ======== So if u have a 64bit version of windows, do step 8a and 9a. If u dont, do step 8b. It works for vista and windows 7, wouldnt surprise me if it works for XP as well. I was hesitant to mess with dll's in my windows folder, but eventually i took the risk, just wanted to play terraria. And its great. However, i also read somewhere that in the future when you want to update your windows again, or when new versions of framework need to be installed, it MAY cause a problem. But ive long given up trying to update my stupid vista, and framework wasnt installing properly anyway, so who cares. Im playing and i get no errors whatsoever. Sadly it didn't work =( Weirdly, for starters, the 'dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe' file in Terraria's Steam directory didn't contain a file named 'netfx_Core.mzz' for some weird reason. I even deleted it and validated with Steam so it re-downloaded, but still nothing. So i downloaded the file from Microsoft and there it was. I then renamed the old .dll, and copied over the new one from my fresh MS download, restarted even, and Terraria's still giving the same error. Really scratching my head now.. :S |

And did you go thru all the steps? Oh and youre right, the dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe file in the terraria folder isnt the full installation file, its one that downloads the full installation file. So ill edit the steps a bit. Last edited by iuewh3298rhkjfd: 06-08-2011 at 08:57 AM. |

Hey, I had the same problem a while back for a full week, but managed to get it working by doing allll that, plus going to All Programs, then Windows Updates, and doing every possible update I possibly could, AFTER renaming the one file to old and copying an up-to-date one from my fiance's laptop. It took a good half hour to an hour to do all the updates, but I have no .NET issues at all anymore.
Dungeons was another game with the same issue, if that helps anyone, also. |

Thank you both again for your replies.
(I run Vista 32bit btw) Sadly it's still not working. Bizarrely, now the error msg doesn't show up - so that's 'progress'? hehe I run the game and it thinks for a bit, then just vanishes without popping an error. I'll keep plugging away - I mean i have over 100 Steam games and they all work just fine. :S |

Mine drops at startup too. Wish I knew before I bought it that it required framework 4. So does Bit.runner and I already fought with this same problem before to no avail. Framework 4 is a major headache. Oh well 2 duds out of 96 games ain't too bad.

Ok, so after 4 aggrivating days I've fixed my problem. I'm running Windows 7 64bit and the TRUE issue was my 'Windows Update' was broken. It hasn't been updating for a long time and trying to launch it freezes my pc.
I learned you can't play Terraria without Framework 4 .Net, and Framework 4 won't work unless you have Windows 7 Service pack 1 (at least). Otherwise it just takes a dump in your DLL files and fails. If your windows update is broken like mine I used this guide to stop it, delete the corruption, and repair: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/...9-ba914c78983b Killing windows update was tricky, I had to switch it to manual and kill it after reboot. And I recommend running the .bat file with both programs Stopped. After that with Update running I could update my W7, took about 12 hours to run through 10 updates one at a time, including the service pack and framework. But now Terraria works and so do the Bit.runner games. PS: I've also learned Framework 4 can fail install if you've got thumbdrives or ghostdrives on your pc. And be sure to have a couple gigs of free space for all the updates or they will fail as well. Last edited by spazbomb: 07-10-2011 at 01:30 PM. |
