Hi all,
I've just tried to buy Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY on sale.

The purchase bugged out half way through, it was waiting to log into paypal for about 5mins but never did so I never authorised the payment anywhere, I eventually decided to just try again....

Here's where it gets Scary because when I tried again I got this message:

from within the Steam client, fair enough, I thought I'd try via the online store... but now it says I own the game.

Paypal have no record of my payment under history, the steam client has the game under my purchase history, it's in my game list and I haven't paid for it.

Now.... I'm not installing it and contacting support, place bets on the outcome if you wish, I will update when I get one.

Update: Rar, in the dying minutes the initial payment just outright failed and it allowed me to purchase it again

Phew! Nearly the best outcome I could have hoped for.

And hey you never know. Valve might be nice and say "Oh sorry about that, as a token of our appreciation for your honesty we would like to offer you to keep the game for free"

The likeliness of that actually being said? Well probably not that high, but have hopes!!!

I'll admit my personal opinion is this will end up rather pear shaped....

Filed a ticket, haven't installed and have advised within my ticket I know they can't honour the sale price when it's over so am happy for them to remove it if needs be.

The best outcome is they will let you keep the game for free, worst thing is they will remove the game from your account until you buy it again.

The problem here is, Steam support isn't that quick and if they remove the game the deal will probably be over by the time that happens.

Random Idea, on my previous purchases it shows this in paypal:

Business Name:
Steam Games (The recipient of this payment is Verified)
Email:
paypalsupport@valvesoftware.com

Maybe I should just send them the money direct from paypal? Or would that just open a larger can of worms?

Edit: in reply to weedo above, I know I won't get a reply in the 5 hours or so the sale is on for

I'm also happy to work for Valve Support for free answering the easier problems / giving the generic 'Sorry; we can't help you with 3rd party games' responses in my spare time [e-mail sent], I've seen official posts somewhere advising they have around 40 support staff so I can only imagine how swamped they must be at times.

Your account disabled in less than a week. You did good by contacting support immediately.

Definitely don't send them money. If it's not associated with a transaction ID on their end, it's not going to help.

Check your purchase history. Odds are it's still listed as payment pending. It will turn to payment failed within one or two hours, with the game disappearing from your account. Once it has done that, you can buy it 'again'.

Because it's a Steam payment issue. The fact that the game in question is Batman is irrelevant.
