How are multiplayer ranks determined?

Do you go up in rank just from getting a certain number of wins? Winning against a certain number of people? What?

What is the "weight" value?

Weight is how many times you've played against a particular player. Its value tops out at seven so as to encourage players to fight a variety of opponents, and also to keep people from being able to rank up on just one opponent.
