Increase Shadow Quality beyond 1024:

You can increase the shadow resolution even further by navigating to this directory and opening "video.scr" in Notepad (open a blank Notepad document then drag-and-drop "video.scr" into it): Documents\DeadIsland\out\Settings

Increase the following:

ShadowMapSize(1024)
SpotShadowMapSize(1024)

Comparison:
1024: http://img842.imageshack.us/img842/2650/1024cg.jpg
2048: http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/4353/2048b.jpg
4096: http://img21.imageshack.us/img21/5699/4096f.jpg

Note: The game may crash if you set this too high, this will vary from system to system.

Skip splash screens:
  1. Navigate to Documents -> DeadIsland -> out.
  2. Create a directory tree like this if it does not already exist: Documents -> DeadIsland -> out -> data -> menu -> movies
  3. Download and paste this file into that directory: http://www.mediafire.com/?2lg81cxbdeabvxa

Disable motion blur:

Just a warning - it might be possible to get VAC banned if you play online with this tweak, though I doubt it.
  1. Navigate to Documents -> DeadIsland -> out.
  2. Create a directory tree like this if it does not already exist: Documents -> DeadIsland -> out -> data -> scripts
  3. Download and paste this file into that directory: http://www.mediafire.com/?4ne4xuxyw002d05

    Default (62.5): http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/6471/defaulthpb.jpg
    Tweaked (80):http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/299/80227377.jpg
The file included has a FOV of 80. You can tweak the FOV to your liking by renaming the file to .txt, opening it and searching (ctrl+f) for "fov".

If you are having trouble renaming the file from .xml back and forth to .txt, try tapping Alt while in Windows Explorer, going to Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab -> uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

Has anyone tried the whole .bak thing on the intro clips? I moved them out of the folder and the game didn't even start.

Keep the actual introduction videos (IntroDI_720p.wmv, IntroDI_720p_4_3.wmv) there and manually skip that otherwise you'll just get a black screen.

I hear renaming deadisland.exe through nvidiainspector to deadislandgame.exe may fix SLI.

Its a possible fix. I'm not entirely sure.

Open a blank notepad document then drag-and-drop the file into it.

Increase your Graphics quality -- Overall improvements

Inside the Settings - Video

ShaderPath(3) to ShaderPath(6) -- these are PS3 shaders

FSAA() to FSAA(2) or even number to 16

FXFadeLevel(4) to FXFadeLevel(1) or 0 depending on available memory.

This isn't exactly a quality improvement. The shaders on the PS3 are simply made to be a bit more bloom heavy (glowy), so it's more a preference thing.
Besides I think this setting automatically reverts itself to "3" when changed on the PC.

Those other tweaks mentioned are great though and seem to be working for me.

There are some other tweaks than can be made in there too.
The top of the file that's commented out of use with exclamation points in front are guidelines.

For example vsync can easily be enabled by simple adding "VSync() " to the list, such as it suggested in the top section by the "!VSync()" that's shown.

is vsync working for you? it just seems to cap frames to 60 and not much else.

Try changing the refresh rate to match your monitor's refresh rate.

Yah it's been working just fine by simply adding that tag.
No screen tearing at all for me after adding it.

I may have been wrong about the shader path, I need get some screens taken to see if it's actually changing or just reverting to it's default.

I know that in the settings file it does in fact revert to 3, but I still gotta look into it more.

After setting it to 59MHz which is what my card outputs and turning Vsync on it actually does Vsync correctly
