what is the diffrenece between variants? are some more powerful?

yes... higher stat ceilings and some weapons only avail to the higher types

Mainly stats and abilities. Some have pets, some have buffs, some have AOE.. There's quite a high variety.

If you mean variants of the same character, like say Alpha or Beta, then the Beta generally has more improved stats.
