Overlay trouble: How do I get Steam to recognize a D3D8 game as D3D9?

As the title says, I'm trying to get the Steam in-game overlay to work with a game that Steam identifies as D3D8, but is actually D3D9 due to a mod I use. The game is Operation Flashpoint: Resistance.

The overlay does work just fine with this game normally, but with the graphics mod I use which changes it to D3D9, the in-game overlay no longer works.

I had the same problem with Xfire's in-game overlay, but I found a way to overcome that problem by manually editing Xfire's entry for the game, changing the renderer from D3D8 to D3D9. Now the Xfire overlay works perfectly along with the graphics mod. I'm pretty sure this solution would work for Steam too, but I know of no way to control this in Steam's case. If you know a way or can think of another thing to try, I'd appreciate your input.
