potential fix for crash ("failed to copy string: dst too small")

i mentioned this in another thread, but figured i should start a new thread as well.

this solved the fatal error crash on startup ("failed to copy string: dst too small (64 < 65)") for me in both bit.trip beat and bit.trip runner.

remove any mp3 files from the game folder. the latest editions of the games include the soundtrack, and the files are just chunked into the game folder. removing them seemed to fix the above issue for me when nothing else did.

hope this helps folks.

system info:
win7 64bit
pavilion dv6
ati radeon mobility hd5650

So, I signed up to the forums (finally) when I had this same error and I couldn't find a solution.

Thank you so much for finding the error and posting it! I tried your solution and the game works perfectly fine now for me!

Resaca83,

What you can do is create a folder, on your desktop or in your Music folder, and then drag the mp3s from the game folder to the newly created music folder and they should move right out of the game folder into the new one.

Hope that helps.

Thanks JemaFox,

It was easier as it seemed. I just create a folder named Soundtrack and dragged all the mp3s there, and the game just starts perfectly. That´s an odd situation cause i didn´t have any problem with the Bit.Trip Beat...

When I read this I thought it couldn't possibly fix the problem. Still I moved the mp3s into a different directory and tadaa, the games started working.

Cheers for the solution! I don't think I would ever have fixed the problem on my own because it's so face palm inducingly silly.

lol i know, right? the only reason i thought it might work was because ive had a game before that used files with a .mp3 extension, and it seemed that folks started having the problem during the sale (when the games started including the soundtracks). youd *think* if a game used .mp3 files, the developers wouldnt just drop the soundtrack in the game folder....

I tried this fix, and at least the game starts, but both it and Bit.Trip Beat are unplayably laggy. And I mean UNPLAYABLE, it's measured in SPF, not FPS.
I can run TF2 decently enough, are these two really that intensive?

Edit: I do agree that the glitch this topic's about is somewhere between hilarious and facepalmingly stupid.

take all this with a grain of salt b/c ive been out of pc gaming for years until very recently...

the bit.trip games run on openGL or openAL which, if my understanding is correct, is akin to (but different from) DirectX in that they are both APIs. so it's conceivable that your computer can run directx games perfectly fine, but not openGL games, if your graphics card doesnt support openGL or if your openGL files (?) arent up to date. so you might look into that.

i think in my search for the answer to the "failed to copy string" issue i saw some threads that mentioned openAL/openGL, you might check those out.

i wish i could be more helpful, but im still a bit of a noob myself. :/

Thanks heaps for this! I tried verifying the game cache, reinstalling the game, updating vid drivers, reinstalling .NET framework, reinstalling OpenAL, running in compatibility mode and a whole bunch of other stuff before coming across this thread.

Can't believe this actually works. Definitely one of the weirdest fixes I've seen. Thanks for discovering and sharing it, osiris. I'll have to give you an imaginary rep point for now, as I can't give out real ones being a forum noob and all.

Looked into OpenAl. Uninstalling it, restarting the computer, and reinstalling it fixed both Bit.Trips, and Braid.
