Small question regarding completion...

Are you required to get all green stars to get 100% on the main story?

Nope, you don't neeed any green stars at all, they count same as the gold/yellow ones.

You can complete the story mode without getting any stars or chests. Story mode is all about reaching the exits and getting to the next level really. The stars (yellow) are necessary though if you want to access the bonus levels.
