video driver crash upon beating level?

i just got the game a few minutes ago. whenever i beat the first 3d cog test, the game freezes and my screen goes black then a message pops up saying my video driver failed and had to recover.

video card HD 5750, latest drivers.

If you crash message says that your video driver failed to recover, than this is very likely related to you hardware and drivers (Even doing something really bad in game software shouldn't crash the driver).

You may want to try rolling back your driver to a more stable version. Also check to make sure that all of the binary files are uncorrupted. You can do this by right-clicking Cogs in your Steam client and selecting Properties -> Local Files -> Verify Integrity of Game Cache.
