Steam forgot my categories for 600+ games, estimate 5 hours to re-do

Well this is a right pain in the ♥♥♥.

I have over 600 games on steam and on both my computers all categories set on Steam games are gone. Somehow I still have categorizations on non-steam games but all the steam ones, nodda.

Well, the interface for applying a category is pretty much garbage, so applying KLM GOMS (a common Human Computer Interaction metric for measuring time to use an interface for a given operation) I estimate it will take me over 5 hours to re-categorize everything (provided I can even get the categories right) unless I write my own program to write the file for this.

My question is, how the hell did this happen? Are not categories kept on the steam cloud? I know that Friend List tags are not but that is clearly a matter of space needed. As you can only categorize each steam game once its literally one tiny string per game.

PS: My favorites are gone too.

Thank god the games are still there. I think.

EDIT: I see this got moved to 'Help' but I didn't so much want help as to b*ch about it a bit to let off... steam...
