How to install Portal of Prævus for Steam
I have not tested this, but it should work.
First open the registry (run > type regedit > ok). Locate HKLM/software/ and create Activision/Hexen II/1.11/ Inside Hexen II, create a string called EXE and type Hexen2_exe, create another string called FTP and type HEXEN2. Now find HKLM/software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/App Paths/ and create Hexen2_exe. Add a string in the new directory called Path and type the location of the Hexen 2 directory. Do the same for a string called (Default), but add the program, (e.g. common\Hexen II\glh2.exe). Since Steam only includes the OpenGL version, it's possible the installer won't detect Hexen 2 by now. Try renaming the program to h2.exe and use that in the registry. The Prævus installer should detect the original game now. |

Windows stores data in a place called the "registry".
On you desktop, double click on computer/my computer. Locate Windows (should be C:/WINDOWS). Double click on regedit to open the registry. I'm not going to explain further, the registry shouldn't be touched by inexperienced users anyway. |

Another way, if you have the retail PoP CD in your drive, is to navigate to your drive letter representing your CD Drive to the Install directory.
An example would be D:\Install\Data Inside this folder you should see a folder called portals and 2 executables h2mp.exe glh2mp.exe The most important folder, "portals" should be copied to your steam installation of hexen 2. An example of this would be: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Hexen 2 Optionally, the files h2mp and glh2mp should go in the same Steam Hexen 2 install folder. The h2mp.exe and hlh2mp.exe runs the mission pack (aka the executable that runs it). However as the Windows registry will not be set up correctly, you will need to download a modern "port" of the game's executable to get the mission pack to work correctly-- more on this later. The folder portals contains all the assets such as artwork, maps, sounds, etc. that PoP needs. If done correct your steam install folder structure should look something like this for it to work... folder names are bold. data1 portals glh2.exe glh2mp.exe h2.exe H2mp.exe testapp.exe pmpro16.dll pmppro32.dll and some other dll files. I may have neglected some file names in their entirety but if you have those files, chances are you have the others-- PoP is installed but there are some problems that won't allow it to run on a modern OS without complicated registry tweaks. If you don't want to go through a registry editing process, there are modern ports of Hexen 2 that add new features, squash bugs, and remove problems associated with a 15 year old game with modern operating systems, but rather than re-explain that I will just offer a link on getting hexen 2 setup with a modern computer system. I tried to make this explanation newb friendly as possible. Rep if this helped! Last edited by Wookiestick: 01-05-2013 at 07:51 AM. |

Ultimately all you need is to have the following files:
(first backup your original Hexen II folder somewhere. \data1\pak0.pak \data1\pak1.pak \data1\progs.dat \data1\progs2.dat \portals\pak0.pak \portals\progs.dat Delete all the rest of the junk, including any CFG files and everything in the root of Hexen II. Then upgrade to UQE Hexen II. http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=3062193 It will allow you to play the original game if you don't have the expansion as well as being able to play the expansion if you have the files for it. Just read the documentation on when to use the "-standardprogs" switch and when not. Oh, and you'll have full widescreen support.
