After a few updates to the servers, things are stable again.

Due to high traffic, we have temporarily put the Steam Support site into maintenance mode to free up server resources so that our Support Representatives can continue to reply to existing tickets. Our goal is to have it back online for all users in the next few hours.

We're looking into issues with a few servers that are very slow to process login requests.

We'll be updating some of the Steam servers Tuesday January 3rd, 2011 around 16:00 PST (GMT-8). Chat, game lobbies, and the community web site will be affected. Content downloads and game play should not be affected. Downtime is expected to be short.

We've got the issues that were happening earlier this morning sorted out, and we've been back up and running since about 1015 PST.

We are investigating an apparent hardware failure in the Steam rack

I replaced a failed network switch in the Steam server rack. This work was completed around 0415 PST and we've been back to normal service since. I apologize for the inconvenience.
