Interested in Dark Sector? READ THIS FIRST!

The camera implementation of widescreen (16:10) resolutions is awful.
And for some people this game needs a kick in the mouth before the GUI is set correctly.
(If your ammo count in the top right of the screen is cut off,
try resetting the GUI by: jumping across different resolutions 16:9 / 16:10 / 4:3,
load a chapter or restart game. It worked for me!)

Still,
this game ROCKS!

Just find the best available fullscreen setup for yourself.
I play at 1920x1200 on a 16:10 monitor.
That results in a image that is a bit stretched (and feels zoomed).
Quit annoying, for about 3 minutes!
After that I immersed in one of the best third person shooters ever!

Sure, its linear as hell and we are definitely missing some additions
which could have increased the replay value.
But this game has got THE BEST COVER SYSTEM if have seen on PC.
Think “Gears of War” with the absolute necessity to use it.
Also the game is just brutal, gory as hell and with its official ban in Australia, you know its “special”!
The graphics are sweet, and I can play it on my XP SP3 E8400 rig
with all the eye-candy enabled, synced to my refresh rate at 60 fps, without a hiccup.
That kind of technical “tour de force” should at least be mentioned.

But now for the best thing about Dark Sector: The MULTIPLAYER!
Or actually I should say LAN Multiplayer!
The developers were probably rushed and that’s a real shame
because the multiplayer has 2 great modes: INFECTION & EPIDEMIC.
These scrapped online multiplayer modes should have been the game’s greatest selling point!

Although online gaming is not supported, the (LAN) Multiplayer is still the best feature of the game.
This is because it lets you play “INFECTION” against BOTS!
You can SOLO on your own LISTEN LAN MP Server and kick the %^*&*%^ out of 32 bots!
Thank god for whoever made that possible.
Without it I probably would have forgotten about this game quit easily.

A extra note about the “widescreen” support:
Playing in windowed mode is not really an option as my controls get a bit “twichy”.
Also, almost every widescreen monitor has the ability to display in a 4x3 native resolution.
You'll get black bars on both sides of the screen.
But again,
I’ll give you 3 minutes and after that you will have forgotten about your resolution altogether.

RANT:
Somebody please buy this game’s license or do the remake yourself Digital Extremes!
I’ll preorder if you give me the chance to replay the entire campaign fully leveled up.
Also would love to have the option to play the game without any special powers,
just like in the first chapter which is just sooo good!

I agree that this game is great gameplaywise but you forgot to tell about confusing plot. It was at first supposed to be little different game but for some reason they ditched all they had done and made this half assed story which forgets to tell you about pretty much everything necessary.

If i'd rate this for gameplay alone id say 7.5/10 but if it had story done better and been slightly longer id say solid 8.5/10

Story?

Plot?

I just try to destroy every moving thing that comes in front of me!

But you are absolutely right!
The story is highly forgettable and the ending is “flat”.

I can’t even remember the main characters name.
They could have at least made him into a lushes female.
Its always so cool to see a supermodel cleaning the floor with baddies.

Tip for all “third person shooter god ego game developers”:
Tell "simple" stories and use a female as main character!
Your demography demands it!

Widescreen fix is here: http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=1689799 and it does work just fine.

This game slipped under the radar, a friend told me about it and I was hooked with the gameplay. This is one I keep loaded on the hard drive so I have something to play in between the next new release. I love this game. First time I fired it up, I must have played 6 hours straight.

Yeah, 8.5 out of 10. Of course, I don't have any game that's a 10 anyways.

Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, don't drink and drive. I wanna see you back here so I can harass you some more. (ROFL, just kidding about the harass part)

WHAAAA!!!
Please don’t call it a widescreen fix!
For a lot of people that would imply that this game hasn’t got any widescreen resolution support at all.
But it does!
It’s just the camera angle which seems to be a bit off (for 16:10 monitors).
It’s easily forgivable, and I’m sure some people don’t even notice it,
as they assume they got it to work right of the bat.

Now to go in-depth regarding your “FOV” “fixe(s):
This is my theory:
Dark Sector only has true native widescreen support for 16:9 resolutions.
So if you have a 16:10 monitor you’ll still get the 16:9 “camera”
which spreads the entire image across the extra pixels on the top and bottom,
resulting in a image that is a bit stretched.

Think; Assassins Creed 1 with the black bars on the top and bottom on 16:10 monitors (a disgrace!).
Take a picture in your mind of the actual AC1 game-window and spread that across the entire 16:10 screen,
right over the black bars.
The result is almost the same, the image is a bit stretched.

If you are a purist, playing in a windowed mode, where you can adjust the scaling
to whatever suits you is maybe the best solution.
But I find it to be a real hassle and my controls seem to be less responsive than playing fullscreen.

Editing the “editor.cfg” file works fine resolution wise.
But it doesn’t fix this 16:9 camera for 16:10 resolutions issue for me.
Again, Really don't care about it. The stretch is minimal.
And the game is just so good!

Great to hear that other people also enjoy this hidden gem.

(So guys, what is your highest rated game so far?
And do you have any hidden gems which we need to know about?)

You know that your theory is bull right? The bug applies both to 16:9 and 16:10 resolutions. I can tell BECAUSE i play on 16:9 and I cannot see half of the GUI that this game has.
Will someone PATCH it?

You are kidding, right? How old is this game now? But it still is one of my favorite games. This is one I can go to when I'm tired of the new junk I just paid $60 for, and just enjoy myself.

I have quite a few games that widescreen doesn't work on or isn't quite right anyways. The "fix" I linked to works very well actually. All of this is IMHO, of course. Merry Christmas! Y'all!

Thanks for pointing that “GUI cut off issue” out.
I Forgot all about it.

So, half of your GUI (Graphical User Interface) is missing?
You mean your ammo count in the top right of the screen?
Have I got a surprise for you!

Only had this “GUI cut off issue” twice:
First time when I went from a 4:3 to a 16:10 monitor.
And the second time when I started editing the “editor.cfg” file.

I solved both occasions with a different solution.
First try jumping across different resolutions (16:9 / 16:10 / 4:3).
If that doesn’t work quit to main menu and load a/the chapter.
If that doesn’t work restart the game and run this procedure one more time.
It seems that for some people this games needs a kick in the mouth before the GUI is set correctly!

A friend of mine had the same issue.
He fixed it by loading a chapter 7 gamesave he downloaded.
After that he was able to start playing chapter 1 without the GUI cut off.
STRANGE NOT?

But I assure you, it can be done!
Please give it a try, I’m very interested in the results.

Godspeed,
