So what's up with the fountain in Sands of Time?

You know, the weird blue place where you get the health bar bonuses. And there's this creepy and intriguing exchange the one time you get to visit one with the princess in tow. Do they ever explain it in the later games? Or is it just there to be ~mysterious~?

Forgotten Sands actually revolves around it storywise, though I don't want to spoil anything.
