Any tips for improving lag?

Hey folks,

I want to like this game but since I've come back to it the lag has made it frustrating. I wouldn't say it's unplayable but I'd have more fun if it weren't so jerky. I usually just play whatever game shows up - would I have better luck looking for people's dedicated servers? Also, are there tricks you've found to reduce lag?
