Backing up Paradox games

Why in the world does it take so long to back up Paradox games under Steam?I have this problem of slow backing up on no other games under Steam.So what is the deal with these games?

I'm guessing it's because of all the files, lots and lots of directories and small but numerous files. Something like that anyway - perhaps if you had a SSD it wouldn't matter (?). I personally just copy and paste the STEAM directory to an external hard drive since the backup methods of programs like itunes etc always tend to take four times as long anyhow (compression maybe).
