There is no "best" overall sword in the game.
However, here's a list of some of the swords most people prefer due to how they tend to excel against specific monster types: Elemental: Voltedge, Combuster, Glacius, and Divine Avenger. Shadow: Acheron and Gran Faust. Piercing: Barborous Thorn Blade and Grand Flourish. Normal: Leviathan/Scissor Blade (same weapon, two different skins) and Cold Iron Vanquisher. Split: Fang Of Vog. Guns: Elemental: Nova Driver and Polaris Shadow: Umbra Driver and Biohazard Piercing: Blitz Needle, Plague Needle, and Callahan. Again, there's no real best overall sword. There are swords that excel in specific situations, but not every situation. The same applies to guns. Oh, and this is a list of most common weapons seen. These may or may not be appealing to you, as there are others. If you want to see the full list, look here: Spiral Knights Wiki |

I did a combination of three swords.
Beasts/fiend, get Barbarous Thorn Blade Gremlins/Slimes, get Acheron Constructs/Undead, Combuster Those are the major families. There are the Swarm and Drone families. But I haven't personally encountered Swarm enemies and Drones are annoying. |

Also, the Blackhawk/Sentenza has become more popular as a shadow type gun recently, mostly for Lockdown though.

Because as we know, jellies are the only enemies weak against shadow. Yes, it doesn't work well against jellies, but it works fine against gremlins. And, as I said in my previous post: "mostly for Lockdown though."

Are there any guns with longer range? I'm looking for a generic "switch hitter" (Which wouldn't be a bad name for a gun)

I believe the driver series has the longest range. The one I'd recommend would be the Prismatech Alchemer, the 2* gun that leads up to the Nova Driver.

In some discussion it was concluded that Biohazard has the longest range, though the bullets are also the slowest, so it's not very good as a "switch hitter". Peacemaker is a great utility gun, can't say it's worth getting a 5* gun solely for hitting switches though.
