tf2 in game browser not working

okay, so im trying to import a spray for the first time. i go onto the internet find tons and tons of tutorials saying basically the same thing. go to steamapps/teamfortress2 ect... you get the idea. later on in the tutorial it says to open the game and browse to where you placed the files but when i try to do that the in game file browser says "nope im just going to sit there and not let you navigate anywhere."
how do i fix this or otherwise import my spray?
system:
osx 10.6.8
2.3 GHz intel i5
4Gb ram

No idea.
Im guessing that Apple doesnt allow some Third-Party applications to see their disks.
(And i Have No What Im typing D
