He makes a good point. Someone looking for fast, low-capacity drives should be taking a long hard look at SSD's.

I think tech wise they were outdated when they were new just that SSD were 2 or 3 times the price for half as much capacity.
Also given that Teh flood inThailand has affected regular drive prices SSD may not be such a bad expensive option at the moment.

I didn't say the drives were seven years old, just that I had been using the configuration of two 160 GB drives for over seven years. Three years ago when I did a major system upgrade I also switched from IDE to SATA drives of the same size.

That's something I hadn't considered, my system is whisper quiet right now and I'd like to keep it that way, so the Velociraptors are out.

So now it's down to SSD or stay with spinning platters. Using my current 160 GB size. SSDs at NewEgg.com averaged between $235 and $315 plus one drive by OCZ going for $460, for the machanical drives, they were $50 or less. So, SSDs are small and they are fast but they are also five times or more the price and there are stilll inherant problems with the technology. For now I'll pass on SSDs,

Though apparently not as fast as SSDs, there is this hybrid drive. It's listed as an SSD but is on a PCI-e card and has lots of capacity at 1 TB, the downlde is its price of $500.

Maybe so, but he does it by laughing at people which some may take offense at. There are better ways to make a point than being rude.

Again. Assuming this isn't a RAID array, one SSD + one spinning drive. Gives you high performance, and reliability through diversity, without the cost of dual-SSD's.

If the 600G V-raptor was the price of a 1TB WD Blue id think about getting one but when a 1TB WD black is just as fast and cost a lot less hell no..

What the raptor does have over the WD black iirc is better seek time's even that may not be true any more... Platter density killed the raptor..

As dosbox has said a single SSD + a 1Tb HDD is the best bet..

Totally agree with most. SSD + HDD is full of win. The Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.D is where it's at re HDD performance, kicking both the WS Black and F3 down a few notches with its single platter design.
