with that logic, why bother improving the graphics? why add anything?

between Half Life and Half Life 2 tons of cosmetic changes were made. hell, even between Episode One and Two there were cosmetic changes to the game.

the game is supposed to be a first person narrative. but you arent even a person. you are a floating camera with arms! adding them to the game wont detract from the experience. it may even help draw people into the game more, immersion. plus it could always help with walking on a narrow platform if you know where your feet are (though ive never had that problem but then again i love first person platformers).

now i see both sides on this issue, and ultimately i think whatever Valve does will be probably be for the best.

freaking out about giving Gordon legs would be like freaking out they changed the Health Dispenser in Half Life 2.

cornerpeeking is awesome when its done right but its really more for tactical shooters so it doesnt really work for Half Life.

Well, I think having legs would be distracting. There are many situations (at least in the first Half-Life) in which you're in a higher ground than your enemies, so, having the legs there would be kind of annoying, as they'd be blocking your view. That's why I think it shouldn't be added. Graphical improvements? Sure. Legs? No, they'd be distracting (in my opinion).

do you think arms are distracting? or what about the gun? they are in your view more than legs would be. you could easily remove both and put a small icon indicating what weapon you are holding. this is how i played Descent btw.

the only time legs would be in your view is if you are looking down. ive never played an FPS with legs where i thought to myself "man these legs sure are getting in the way." its not like your character is smelling his knees or anything.

it really seems like a silly thing to be against. its not like iron sights or something that would dramatically affect how the game is played. its not something like a stamina bar (AUX meter) which was added to the second game.

Seeing your own legs really adds to the experience. Even Duke Nukem forever had it :P (and Cronicals of Riddick). I personly would like a Co-op mode, but that probly wil never happen.(outside of mods).

Chell (portal gun) + Freeman (grav gun) coop ftw? Of course, that will never happen.

i personally want to see a block + counter attack feature with crowbars as an alt fire for a long time now.

Hopefully they'll add iron-sights. Shooting from the hip is totally....unrealistic. On the other hand, I guess the series isn't really shooting for realism

I've kinda never really posted much on the actual Half-Life 2 forums, but I'm really bored today, so lets see if I can throw some thoughts into this part of SPUF for once.

@The argument about the need for legs, lets see what that causes, both obvious and a bit more complex.

Positives

Looks nice

Negatives
Adding legs serves to extend the actual existence of Gordon as his own entity in the world of Half-life. Why is this a negative? Isn't Gordon the main character? Well yes.

But with Half-Life Valve has kept Gordon as a silent arm and a crowbar with the mentality that we as players, though playing as Gordon, start feeling like we are actually the ones involved in everything going on in the Half-Life universe.

When you are trapped or in a bad predicament in the game you treat it as "I'm in this bad situation", not "Gordon is in this bad situation". Valve's goal is to keep Gordon as he is, almost "disembodied", so that the entity filling the space in the universe is actually the player.

While adding something like legs doesn't seem like a huge deal, that is most likely the reason Valve might not do that. (Though I could be wrong).

Yes, my point being a floating arms aren't grounded in the world.
Legs causes the character to really (and literally) have footing in the world, where you actually are simply in the characters shoes, and not your own.

It's more design philosophy and psychoanalysis than the usual stuff I know, and I'm not saying Valve definitely wouldn't, I just know they look into stuff like that.

So you are that giving gordon his legs would give him more personality?
He wears the HEV suit,it could be anyone inside it,I don't see why this would be bad.
I mean anyone could wear that suit, it's not like it's part of gordon's body.
