Other non-doujin shmups?
I really, really liked Jamestown and now I'm interested in checking out other shmups but it seems like 98% of them are Japanese and doujin productions.
I was just wondering if anyone knew of any others in the same style as Jamestown? Preferably in English and no anime. |

There's a fair amount recommended in this old thread here:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=1971029 some of them are doujin, others aren't. however it shouldn't be hard to browse through them, especially considering ones like Eden's Aegis and Blue Wish Resurrection + are free |

how "like" is "like"?
sounds like u mean "a lot like", but ... shmups is one thing but there's a lot of other reflex-heavy, blow-a-bunch-of-stuff-up, dual-stick-ish shooters out there. nation red comes to mind if u haven't played that. (demo exists) |

Doujin literally means "independently produced."
So what you want is: * A shoot em up * That was not made by an independent group * That has a western release * That has no anime graphics ... It literally does not exist. |

Also this: http://store.steampowered.com/app/4320 though it has a rather bad MetaCritic score. |

No twin stick shooters either.
Strictly want shmups like Jamestown but preferably without anime. Star Trek D-A-C is not a shmup. And yeah, I saw that thread, karterfreak. Didn't really contain anything that was relevant to my interests... not to mention that most of the recommendations are like $30 a pop. |

Honestly your restricting yourself quite a lot if you don't want to play any Japanese shmups, due to the fact that the majority of them are Japanese, but not all of them are anime styled. Unfortunately there's not much you can do about the language thing, but honestly shmups are for gameplay no one really plays them for story... right?
![]() CAVE have quite a few bullet hell shmups that are strictly Sci-Fi themed, no anime mostly DonPachi, DoDonPachi and Ketsui. (They're all hard as hell though.) It's worth a shot though you never know you might really enjoy them.

Sine Mora is partnership between Japanese Grasshopper Manufacture and 'Digital Reality' (Hungarian). Not on Steam to my knowledge (XBLA), and voice acting is not in english, but definitely worth playing and a thoroughly professional production.

I can recommend the Raiden series http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raiden_%28series%29. I've played only Raiden II which I've bough recently on a CD and gues what - game may be old but runs perfectly on Windows 8 with X360 controller (!).
The fullscreen graphics looks very pleasant (animations/background are totally eye candy) and the music is absolutely great (played as a CD-Audio tracks). The game itself is rather short (arcade style) and with very approachable difficulty - based mostly on your reflex as opposed to avoiding endless patterns/tunnels of missiles in Jamestown). Check it out! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RuG41oe6Hjw Last edited by totalizator: 04-18-2012 at 04:53 AM. |

Not in the same vein as Jamestown, but very fun. |
