Yes, the taint of the coming casual game culture that strips options from games is already evident in the 2005 Steam version.

At least that option was back in Half-Life 2 + Episodes and Portal. However, you can't delete the autosaves (and now not even the quicksaves) in Portal 2. That's something I don't like, after I beat a game, I don't want old saves occupying space. Although I've to admit that, when I was younger, I always kept a save of Apprehension in Half-Life, after the Black Ops part, right before being captured, I was scared of that part; and I don't know why, since I didn't have any problems in the second Black Ops encounter.

Only in the disc version. If you patched the game to 1.1.1.0 it would pretty much be same as the steam version which is also 1.1.1.0

See this for extra examples.

I loved the won days, and still have my hl/op4/bs discs. I still remember my first CS (beta 2) rounds, and the transition from qwtf to tfc. I ran those games at 20-25 FPS, but still enjoyed every minute.

Good stuff.

The community was a lot different back then. Those dudes whom you remember are married with kids now.
