You can "practice" on the first map, playing alone. And some maps can be played in multiplayer with only one player, but Alien Swarm is played best with others. Friends are the best, of course, but I've also met some nice people online.

type asw_ignore_need_two_player_requirement 1 and it'll let you play any map solo.

You have to play as Engineer if you want to play solo

Using the add bot commands allows you to play solo with three bots assisting you, making for a fun way to experience the various maps and practice on them before playing online with friends.
