Lightbulb Fix for non starting SE V!

I use Windows 7 x64, and the game did not started for me at all.
After a few hours trying to solve it, I have found the solution!

1st: You have to open an Administrator command line terminal.

You don't know how to?
a.) open up the Start Menu
b.) type:
cmd
c.) right click it, then click "run as administrator", if UAC ask about "are you sure?" choose yes.

2nd: Navigate to SE V's directory.
(For me it was E:\Steam\steamapps\common\SpaceEmpiresV\SE5)

You don't know how to?
a.) if you have to change the drive letter, you just have to type it:
E:
b.) now you have to chamge directory:
cd Steam\steamapps\common\SpaceEmpiresV\SE5

3rd: Now you have to symlink 2 files from steam's main directory:

a.) mklink ClientRegistry.blob ..\..\..\..\ClientRegistry.blob
b.) mklink Steam.dll ..\..\..\..\Steam.dll

Done! The game should now start.

Q: Wouldn't be much more easier to copy the files?
A: Yes, but the copied files wouldn't be updated with the originals at any possible steam update.

Hmm, when I do this I get a "Range check error" and then an endless list of Access violations. Any idea what could be causing this? I tried XP-SP3 compatibility but that didn't do a thing.

The "Range check error" seems to be a long lasting bug for me, it occurred for me a few times ages ago with SE4 and SE:Starfury...

The system cannot find the path specified

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SpaceEmpiresV\SE5

Is my path, and I'm positive I'm putting it in right.

thx placi for the good and simple solution.

@virlomi: cd (change directory) yourself through the directories one by one to SE5, if you are still trying to solve it. Then execute mklink being in the SE5 directory using as suggested the relative notation back upward through the directory chain, then there is little risk of messing it up. Use the dir command with the intended path to check for the correct representation of the directories, if it is not working yet. (If all fails, please provide more details on what is happening.)

My game wasn't starting either so I tried this fix.

I only had to symlink steam.dll to get it to work and the game works fine. Well, it is pretty sluggish, particularly the mouse pointer but it works; thanks for the fix.

Symlink didn't work

Hi guys,
I have tried doing symlink via the command prompt panel and it didn't work for me. It said that both the ClientRegistry.blob file and the Steam.dll were symlinked or whatever it said after I typed in the command and the game still doesn't work for me. Is there any other ways to fix this problem as I have searched the internet relentlessly and there is nothing else on there which helps.

Thanks

Simply deleting my clientregistry.blob fixed it for me after jacking up the simlinks above. I was surprised it worked.

Even if you get it working, for me it's barely playable at a reasonable resolution. It's the game. Malfador Machinations has basically abandoned it due to some reason (honest or otherwise). The source code isnt released so that people can fix it, either.
