Problem with Chapter 1 part 13

New to the game and cannot get past the gate on part 13. I have pulled the lever above the gate more times than I can count. How do you get the gate to open?:

Maybe you make the same mistake i made in the beginning: Levers don't need a simple push but you have to push your key again and again. The icon for this action is actually pulsating to tell you so, but i totally overlooked that.
