New to Steam Skinning

I'm not sure if this is the correct section, so sorry if it's not.

Anyway, I can't find a single tutorial on anything about this, so I've just kind of been randomly messing around with a copy of the original Steam skin. This is what I what I have so far: http://i.imgur.com/HRGm7.png

There's a few things I'm stuck on though. I managed to make the border of that darker with no problem but how do I do it on the main steam window? No matter which value I change, it seems to stay the same.

My second problem is this: http://i.imgur.com/eGQB6.png

Any idea on where I'm going wrong here?
