I notice crashes in my case occur less frequently with low quality meshes. I'm too nervous about VAC to start adding things to the game. But I do think you're on to something here.
Valve should hand over the source code... seriously. |

Rowdy..as in the Crux?
Anyways, you think that maybe it's a specific item that is causing the crashes? It seems like servers that crash continue to crash, so I'm thinking that these servers have a regular that happens to have the item causing the problem and doesn't realize it. |

And be advised, a server crashing and a group of clients crashing are two different things. Like when it happens to us, 11/15 people will crash, the rest just keep playing |

So if hats and miscs are the problem, why do we keep adding more of them into the game?

Changing hat styles tends to force crashes.
I had a curious round before where I was constantly on the edge of crashing, where the game would freeze up and jitter but start working again, then it finally crashed. Any ideas? |

The update that went out today addressed the mass crash bug. It was a little more technical than just servers using SetCustomModel, but it was what seemed to agitate it the most, so that's what we went with in the patch notes. For example, it was easily reproducible when a scout had its model changed to the pyro with SetCustomModel.
Using custom models would have worked around the crash if the custom models you were using all had the same number of flex weights. The number of crash reports after today's update is about 75% less than the number of crash reports during the same period yesterday, so it seems to have made a big impact. |
