Are there Axes among the available melee weapons fightable with? Axes are my favorite melee weapon to beat stuff up with.

Plus, can this game be played entirely in single player, & does it require constant internet connection?

Lastly, i've learned of the Terraria Wiki here on this Thread, but before I actually use it, I wanna know first... will I get the snot spoiled outta the game if I read it? Or are some parts of it readable without big Spoiling?

Many thanks for all of the work put into the Newbie FAQ! ^_^

Edit: Ok, I gave in to temptation, & dared the Terraria Wiki. I now know there are Axes in the game, & I dare to hope the Axe Family of Weapons/Tools are viable final weapon-worthy choices for me to use, even though it's lookin like i'll be technically using a Tool as a Weapon. So be it. I have now spoiled myself significantly... but I know full well i'm responsible for the consequences for my actions.

I could still use some info on how I would go about playing Terraria Singleplayer, if a Terraria Character I make has to choose a Mode to exist on (Single Player, Co-Op, PvP) or if the Character can travel between Modes in any way, or do ya have to make a separate Character for each Mode ya end up playing on... I hope i'm being clear on what i'm inquiring about, because I still dunno how this kinda stuff works on Terraria... I'm getting the impression this kinda game is different from any i've ever played before, so I think i'm completely new to playing this kinda species of game. I wanna know what i'll be getting into to before I get this game, if I do.

Many thanks for your time.

There is really only 1 axe made for battle (War Axe of the Night). The game can be played only in single player, and doesnt require a constant internet connection (unless youre playing multiplayer, obviously)

Lastly, the player you make can move between Multiplayer or singleplayer

at any time, keeping all your items and gear. There is no “PvP” mode, but multiplayer does have “teams”. with these teams, you can see where your allies are, and you can never do damage to them. To be able to take player damage, you must press the PVP button.

note however that it doesnt let you do damage to players, just take damage.

Team Speech?

Does anyone know if there is a way to communicate with other players when playing multiplayer?

Press Enter, and it'll bring up the chat dialog and cursor. Type there, press Enter again.

Got some basic questions as a newbie coming from Minecraft:

Is it possible to swim? I got a lake next to my hidey hole I'd really like to swim over but I sank every time and had to walk underwater.

And how do people look for rare ores? Am I supposed to do it like Minecraft with strip mining or should I just do cave spelunking?

You can only swim if you find flippers, which you can only find in chests that spawn underwater. (Ones that get flooded after spawn don't count.) To get out of water otherwise, you'll have to rely on jumping, digging, and placing blocks.

To find rare ores, caves are the most efficient way to go. You can also make a Spelunker Potion to make any valuables glow on screen, even if they're somewhere that'd normally be out of sight, but the resources to make one aren't entirely trivial (see the Wiki page here).

I see. Thanks for the answers. Time to dig straight down!

To the OP - Amazing guide, very nice work and to all who are involved in sending in more info / corrections, etc.

To Mad Mephit - definitely agree. Once I saw the Miner's helmet for sale, all I did was mine and sell until I could afford it. For me it was one of those game changing items because I no longer had to put torches everywhere. I could just focus on digging and exploring after that.

To anyone else - is it possible to find the miner's helmet as a random chest item at all? Or is it vendor exclusive?
