Making your textures sharp and detailed?

I have a good texture and a really nice normal map. The issue is the texture looks bland without the normal map, and in-game the normal becomes visible ONLY when I have the flashlight on. Also is there a way to make the textures more crisp and detailed instead of blurred?

Save them at a higher resolution. Prior to Portal 2, most stock textures are 512x512 at 72 ppi resolution. If you were to go to, say, 2048 x 2048, the textures should be much crisper. However, this will increase the file size of your packed map/.vpk file/mod.
