It is most visible on img 2. Compare the 8k and 16k one. Although the difference is really marginal.

In image 2, it's a fairly huge difference--some of the distant textures appear to be either extremely low quality, or in some cases missing entirely (the windows on distant buildings look black at 8192), where they appear to be full quality at 16k

You don't need to link to your site in order to link to someone else's site

The tool is here: http://donotargue.com/cfg-makers/rage/

It's quite handy and getting better all the time.

I've tried all this... still looks awful!

I've tried the config file, updating drivers, and changing video card settings... it still has too many popping textures to play. It is essentially broken unless I get a patch.

Just wanted to say 16384 pages (for everything except vmtr) are working fine on my AMD 5850 (1 GB). There's even less popping because of the bigger cache. My vt_maxppf is set to 16, too, perhaps that helps.

From what I tested there's no difference between image_anisotropy 1, 4, 8, or 16. I think it's a useless cvar, and only vt_maxaniso (already controlled by the game video options) does something.

I love Bethesda games, but they have a loooong standing reputation of releasing games before they are stable. I lost any strong interest in id Software after about Quake 3, so I'm not sure how their more recent releases have been. I just remember DooM 3 not running that well and paling in comparison to Half-Life 2.

That said, I did give Rage a try, and after the first patch it worked great for me. Great visuals, and very fluid gameplay. Decent storyline, and for the most part fun gameplay... though rather repetitive.

Rage is something a bit new for Bethesda, and a very good turn in the right direction for id Software. I look forward to great things with this new partnership.

Maybe even a *truly* brand new gaming engine for TES VI.

=== > So there is still a way to somewhat improve further more the in-game settings by editing the Rageconfig.cfg and setting the 3 first vt_page values to 16384. < ===

Higher cache values than the in-game settings:

vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly = 16384
vt_pageimagesizeuniquediffuseonly2 = 16384
vt_pageimagesizeunique = 16384
vt_feedbackLodBias -1 // or -0.5 <-- for better distant textures sharpness

--------------------------------------------------------------------

I tried the different settings of "pageimagesize" and the greater is the number, better is the textures quality (at distance), and also it greatly reduces the texture pop-in because of more RAM being used at all time.

*Note that these screenshots were taken by the STEAM overlay screen capture option (F12), thus causing some quality lost compared to a pure .BMP or .PNG (but it's easier/quicker for me to post), so they ALL look better AND sharper before screen capturing into these small .JPG

(I suggest to open all of these at once, and navigate between them to notice all the subtle changes.)

--> Anti-Aliasing = 8

The most noticeable differences I observed between 8k and 16k are in images 1 and 2

Depending of the area/point of view, the visual differences between 8192 and 16384 may be very little to non existent, so we can assume that the 8192 setting is sufficient to max out the textures quality required by the game in theses areas/points of view (Or the id Tech5 engine further auto reduce the graphics when set too high, when judging the performances will suffer).

In addition, setting the game to 16384 results in better textures buffering (Textures pop-in are practically gone, even when rapid 180 degree mouse spin outs) but requires a lot of VideoRAM (more than 1Gb apparently) in certain locations and will more likely causes stuttering/freezes/LAG if you don't have that much on your present video card.
--> 8192 is more suitable for 1Gb or less VRAM
