Limited User Accounts

Currently, I have not bought a game from Steam; retail or otherwise. So, I have a limited account which doesn't allow me to add friends. If, I download Alien Swarm will my account be switched from a limited account to a regular account?

No. Demos, Free Weekends, and other promotions do not act as qualifying items.

Well this isn't a demo, promotional trial or anything like that, it's a full game. Honestly I have no idea if it qualifies.

It's a free game, so no, it does not qualify. Full features of Steam are only for paying customers.

Doesn't that seem sort of stupid? Isn't the point of Alien Swarm ostensibly to get people using Steam? Why invite people on Steam, then slam the door in their face when they're giving it a try?

This is a bad policy; it's off-putting to new users and I recommend changing it.
