I too LOVED and still LOVE far cry 2 and wish there were more games that capture that spirit of free world adventure and the underdog.
I would recommend: Just Cause 2 : an open world environment, fun things to do, good storyline Crysis: excellent FPS... good free world environement I wish there was more... I will try and get into the STALKER Pripryat but last time I tried it the beginning few scenes seemed really hard and I couldn't get into it. For me to enjoy an FPS style game the combat mechanics have to be fluid and seem pretty natural. That's one reason why I didn't like Fallout so much. Borderlands I also found boring after a while... there was something just a bit off about that game.. .couldn't quite put my finger on it ... but it got boring fast |

borderlands was like diablo but first person and the loot was guns. The story didn't hold like diablo though. I had fun with it and eagerly await the 2nd because they're supposed to be bringing in more story.
it'd be great if we could cross-platform co-op =( |

RAGE, if you can get it to work.
STALKER Series. Crysis 1, WarHead are good semi open FPS (not so much Crysis 2) Far Cry 1 (depending on if its your thing or not)/ |

this is off topic but just wanted to pimp 'payday, the heist' a bit for y'all. pretty cheap and fun. kinda like l4d but no zombies, repeat NO ZOMBIES (or vampires, mutant muskrats, cyborg prostitutes, enormous bearded gelatin rhinos, etc) that alone is worth a portion of the price.

I'll add another vote for Just Cause 2. I've played JC 2 and FC 2 more than any other games I've bought, by a very wide margin.
JC2 is 3rd person though, but I play it with a pretty good 1st person mod. The world is freaking enormous. It takes about 45 minutes of real time to drive around the perimeter of the islands, but fortunately you can use planes and helicopters to do it quicker. Plus, you have a helicopter extraction option, sort of a fast travel sort of thing, but not as silly. And JC 2 has that same sort of tongue-in-cheek campy dialog and silliness like Far Cry 1 had. If I could create the perfect game, it would be a blend of JC 2 and FC 2.

just picked up stalker soc as per recommendation by some of you learned and fellow fc2 fans, and yup yup, it rocks. as stated, it's not as slick as fc2 but has TONS of content. lots-o-weapons, missions, cool stuff to find, and i don't even mind the zombie/monster elements too much (at least not yet, as there are not hordes of them swarming you every turn). one of the measures of a good fps is how long you can play without realizing the passage of time. i play this game for hours and it seems like moments. great call folks.

If you haven't gotten too far into it, I'd recommend that you get the complete mod. It has a boatload of bug fixes, and enhanced textures. It does not modify the gameplay in any meaningful way. You do have to start a new game to use it.

![]() I didn't think to mention STALKER, but... yeah. STALKER SoC, IMO, is one of the best games ever made, and will probably be popular for a long time to come. |

If you don't mind isometric, Jagged Alliance 2 has a great mercenary background, really solid mechanics, and with the 1.13 patch, more guns and gadgets than really any other game of its type. Its also pretty open-ended in the direction you can take your progression. Its set in a nice banana republic backdrop, and its available on steam to boot.
X-com is pretty good as well, its humans versus aliens but considering how important funding is and how much time you spend allocating equipment, you might as well be in a mercenary game. And its easily the best isometric, tactical game ever made. Even though it is sci-fi, I still really recommend you look it up. |
