Some FF11 questions?

I have been debating getting this game for a while. And now that I here FF14 is horrible and not worth it I may get FF11.

But I want to know is it a fun game? Is there a decent sized community? Is it hard to start up for new players since it has been out for so long?

Also, since this game plays all players on PC PS2 and Xbox360 together, if I buy this game on Steam and play on PC could I also log onto my character on Xbox 360 (and possible my PS2 as well)? Or do you have to pay extra to log onto from other systems?

The game is still fun, leveling has become a lot easier with the Abyssea expansions. The economy is sort of special, but again after getting to level 30 and going into Abyssea it becomes easy to build up currency. It definately helps to find people to play with, a lot of the activities require small groups or work best in groups, but you can still hop in with other people that are shouting in the main cities for group activities. If you are looking to play it on consoles the PC account can be logged into from there, the problem is that you will need to find the install disks for the consoles. Once you've used your install disk for 360 just register your account info there and you're good to go. For the PS2 you'll need the hard drive attachment that came with the game to install FFXI. If you've got a 1st gen PS3 tho you can install it on there after downloading the PS2 game compatibility upgrade on the PSN as well.
