You don't need to delete the game. You just need to rename that specific file. Don't rename the one in system32. Just the one in the game folder. If you overwrote the version inside system32, then you'll have to find a way to recover the original dlls or else you risk a VAC ban. (As VAC does a MD5 scan as it loads the DLL, it will certainly trigger a vac ban every time by modifying that file). |

HLS is not Goldsrc so you don't have to uninstall that. |

You should be, just go into your Steam folder and make sure no trace of those games remain in the folder. After that you are free to reinstall any of the games if you want.

Here are my two cents for whatever its worth:
I've been part of the development team for Cry of Fear. Being the voice actor for Simon I had open spaces in between the voice work where I tested the mod for all kinds of bugs and whatnot. I've had Cry of Fear installed on my computer in various builds/stages of completion for four years, while at the same time playing half life deathmatch online. The voice actor for the Doctor, Lasse Holmen, has had builds for cry of fear installed for equally long and hasn't been VAC banned. I know for a fact that both James and Andreas, the Cry of Fear project leads have both played half life deathmatch, the specialists, counterstrike and so on. None of us have been banned, warned or in any form notified by valve/steam that Cry of Fear is using some kind of forbidden file that will cause a VAC ban. And to have it stated if only to quell the question, yes I've heard about the delayed ban system that usually means it could take days or months for a ban to take effect, but we're talking years upon years here on our end. That has to be one awfully delayed ban if that really is the case. And after almost 125000 downloads we have yet to have someone come to the forum and complain that Cry of Fear got them VAC banned. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't sit still without writing it some place if it happened

Fair enough, but I will say that after installed Cry of Fear and then verifying my HL1 game files, I couldn't play Cry of Fear. It kept saying that it couldn't run in software mode but wouldn't get out of it.
I am paranoid enough to wonder if there is a custom Glide file in there or something ala Paranoia. |

Did you run the mod in OpenGL? Sounded like the kind of error message I got myself
when I tried to run half life in one of the other two graphics options. |

I tried to run it in any way I could and got nowhere
It kept resetting to software and then telling me it doesn't support software mode. (nVidia 8600 GS)

So, just wanted to let everyone know, I downloaded this mod and never deleted this file (not knowing that it caused bans if rewritten).
Ever since hearing about this, I've been super paranoid about my steam since my account is from 2004, and I have almost 350 games. If I had KNOWN that playing a game running on Half-Life's engine would have caused a VAC ban, I would NEVER have even downloaded this game. I'm not blaming the developers for anything, but for something as serious as getting someone VAC banned, they definitely did a ♥♥♥♥ty job alerting people and making their players more aware. I've contacted support and they told me they couldn't provide any details on the mod providing VAC bans, but they did say Quote:

Not trying to make this sound like my blog, hopefully it's just telling the developers how I feel. Again, I'm not blaming them for anything, but they should make a notice in their game to delete this file before playing other multiplayer games. I'm sure if they did make a notice, people like me wouldn't be paranoid as ♥♥♥♥ about a potential VAC ban. Quote:
And didn't one of your other games get people VAC banned? If so, that supports my statement about how the developers should be making this problem more aware especially if it's happened in your previous games. And here I am now, having to worry about the day where I get an email telling me I got VAC Banned :C Last edited by DarkRanger57: 04-19-2012 at 05:09 PM. |

---- You will get VAC banned for having a mod overriding HL OpenGL driver ONLY if you play HL or its multiplayer mods ON VAC-ENABLED SERVERS. You won't get banned for playing single-player HL or mods, including Cry of Fear. Playing CS won't get you banned, playing Half-Life multiplayer will, unless you remove/rename opengl32.dll. Sorry to revive this thread.....but I have to ask, if you downloaded and installed this mod, however you had no other half life 1 mods or half life 1 engine related games installed at the time, is there a possibility of getting a VAC ban when your playing? Or is it when you may possibly be only playing on VAC secure servers in other games?
Also if I delete the mod and everything related to it, the next time i install cs 1.6, I should be fine, correct? |
