Question Steam Sims with Retail expansions

I've looked all over this forum and Google and I can only seem to find people who have retail TS3 who're wanting to use DLC from Steam. I want to know the opposite, can you install store bought or elsewhere purchased expansion packs with the core game bought on Steam? I didn't know if it worked the same way as having retail TS3 disc with Steam's DLC, which I know doesn't work. Sorry if this has been asked to death but I can't seem to find a real answer and wouldn't like to pioneer the answer. Thanks in advanced.

People have tried origin bought DLC with steam and that doesn't work. But retail expansions...don't think I've seen anyone try that. Off hand it *should* work assuming you register it with steam before Eaxis.

But it's a 50/50 chance. Sometimes steam will recognize retail software on its network...othertimes you're SoL.

Thanks for the reply.

I have the expansions on CD from the store and haven't installed/registered them anywhere. I wanted to see if I could get a real answer before I tried just to be precocious. At any rate if I were to try, would I simply install it where Steam has my games installed (C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common) or somewhere else? Would that even work? I wonder because I have no idea how that would work or if it would.. hence my inquiry. Also I didn't just go out and buy these for my Steam version, I got them a while back for my original copy of TS3, which in a long story short, was gone before I had a chance to use them, thus why I purchased the Steam version. Sorry for the irrelevant info lol.. Thanks for the input!

I don't think it would work. Steam versions of The Sims have their own launcher, and that seems to be somewhat important for (for example) being able to download and use items from the Sims store.

Edit: Oops, apparently Steam original + retail expansions can work -- see this thread: http://forums.steampowered.com/forum....php?t=2585649

Long story short, it is risky and probably will not work. They put big orange warning text on the Steam store pages for Sims for a good reason.

You should buy the expansions the same way you bought the base game - on Steam.

I hadn't seen any warnings but thanks for opening my eyes to their existence.

Thank you both for your help!
