Civ 5 multiplayer question

When ever me and a friend try to play a game,one of us either cant connect or we drop out mid-game.what are some tips so we can actually play a full game?

I have been having the same problems, one of us disconnects for no reason, or a save has both of us stuck at the please wait button.
What systems are you and your friend using? it might be a mac to windows issue.
