Can i stay with the Thieves Guild?

I'm asking since i am a thief type of guy for these games, Caius Cosades gave me a tip to establish myself as an undercover Freelance Adventurer, and tells me to join the Mages Guild, Imperial Cult or Fighter's Guild. But i want to be in the Thieves Guild, which has a conflict with the Fighter's Guild. With the Cult or the Mage's Guild i don't want to join either since i don't have or want to use the skills they need me to use to join or advance in either of them. Do i need to join any of these guild's?

Help, please? I play in a Non-Steam version of the game, not pirated, it was on a game compilation of Asus Entertainment, very old.
