I use a trick I found from the thread "all mutations unlocked" I believe.

Anyway:

Add this command to your L4D2 start up info by going to your Steam Library, right clicking
on L4D2, and going to Properties. Click "Launch options" and put:

+allow_all_bot_survivor_team 1

Now, load L4D2.

Open the console. Might want to activate it if it's not already been done - options menu > developers console.

write

map c1m1_hotel versus

"In order to open a different map, just change the numbers. map c2m1_highway is the first
level of Dark Carnival and so on and so forth. Don't panic about what the map names
are, like _hotel or _highway, the console will offer a prediction based on the numbers you used.
"

once the game has loaded you open the console again and write:

sv_cheats 1
sb_all_bot_game 1
sb_unstick 0
vs_max_team_switches 99

Switch to infected and VOILÁ, have fun

I still haven't figured out how to play single player VS without going through the console..

a lot of these console commands and what not, work. even the training maps. but its not elegant. Valve has hosted community maps in the past. seems like they could host some training maps too. they could just gather up the best of the community training maps and put them into a single player game mode. doesn't seem that hard to do.

As mentioned, Survival Versus is a great place to learn how to control the infected and work on coordination with other players. The worse you are the longer you end up playing as infected so there is a natural progression there.

Once you have a grasp of the infected you'll stand a better chance of joining a versus server and at least being competent at controlling the infected if still a little naive on the maps and tactics.

The fact is all of these community made options have a barrier to entry - knowing about them.

There should be a clear and simple 'SI Training' at the bottom of the current Vs menu. This should be single player and against four Survivor bots.

Even if it was just one map with no Tanks and Witches this would allow new players to stop ruining my games working out the basics.

It took me about 10 minutes to understand how to use each infected.
It takes however a much longer time to understand how to do a good, coordinated attack, how to react to the survivors doing this or that or how simply said, how to play against humans.

And that is something you can only learn by playing against humans. I don't think a tutorial mode is gonna be so helpful to be honest. It won't teach you the real hard part of playing infected: coordination, using your surroundings, improvising and adapting to your opponents.

I know there's one map out there which let's you train as an infected - the hunter >> Hunter Training
It's a very good map, I just wish there were more of this kind of maps to the other special infected as well.

I agree, but the basic mechanics aren't difficult to get to grips with and the bots are so unlike human players I can't imagine you'd get much out of it.

It would be nice for a beginner though, and tank practice is probably valuable to more since you don't get much time with one.

Compare the no. of updates L4D2 recieved until this very moment with the no. of updates Team Fortress 2 recieved until now, and you'll understand what we mean.

Regular players (people like me, who play L4D2 every week) don't want just more and more maps and modes (mutations)... what we want the most is not more maps and cosmetic changes, but important bug-fixes, balancing changes and a proper match-making system.

The basic mechanics aren't hard to grasp, but the good areas to do attacks, death Charges, block, instant smokes and jockies, places to avoid as survivors, places where spit will fill an entier room and make escape impossible... Those only come from experince, and most players are too intolerant to explain where these places are. They'd rather kick and hope they get someone who already knows.

In addition, difficult things to master, like aiming a Hunter, wall pounces, punch and charge, targeting a Jockey with it's stupid jump mechanic, the best way to steer a survivor, rocket Booming, freeing a Charger with a Boomer for a second charge, which walls can and can't be scratched despite the markings or lack there of, crowning a Witch on the move, activating a Witch and crowning her on the run, learning the range at which a Witch will react to scratches, how to judge a downward charge from a roof top... These are all things the average jerk in a Pub team expects you to know already! What's that? You didn't know that spitting BEFORE the charge causes more damage!? Vote kick!

There's no doubt that playing against people is a better experince, but unless you have 7 friends who are all ready to hold your hand or just as inexperinced as you, you can learn from playing around on your own. Even if all you do is order the bots to stand still and stop shooting so you can master the Round The Corner Rock Throw, Haymakers or Punchrocking, then more power too you.

Yeah. Like saying: "This lobster doesn't come with NEARLY as much butter as the last lobster I had." while most other resturants are serving canned beans. Whiners.
