And suddenly my save games have gone

Last week I decided to play Bioshock 1 again. All was going well until today. I upgraded my machine gun at the first Power to the People station, near the end of Fontaine Fisheries. I hit to save the game, but it crashed, I quit Steam, re-opened it and all of my settings for the graphics and keys had been reset, plus the most recent save game was apparently from 2 days ago, despite the fact I'd saved it multiple times this morning and successfully loaded them.

Looking in the same game folder, there are only 4 files. Three of them from when I last played it a year ago, and one called autosave.

Clutching at straws here, but guess I'm not going to get them back?
