i would say its booth. you can either add this game to your guild wars account, or you can install and play it without having any other guild wars campaign.
at all there are 3 guild wars games (running as stand alone each): 1. guild wars: prophecies 2. guild wars: factions 3. guild wars: nightfall and 2 expansions (needs any guild wars game to play): 1. bonus missions pack 2. eye of the north |

Each game is it's own separate game that also can connect to the other.

The best deal is probably to get Trilogy, which is the original Guild Wars, Factions and Nightfall all bundled together. Each game can be played on it's own, but they are designed to link together allowing you to share characters, skills and items across all three games.
If you have a choice I recommend starting with Guild Wars (also called Prophecies). Being the first in the series Guild Wars introduces you to the game and starts off the whole storyline. Everything will make more sense if you start at the beginning. |

Although Nightfall is playable on its own, getting all campaigns is much more enjoyable, since you can have more skills to choose from.
The more skills you have available, the more chances to have to achieve something in GW. |

no point in buying only 1 campaign, especially if you aim to get anywhere in the HoM

If I have Guild Wars in my Steam account, which is that? Is that just the original or all combined?

Stand alone expansion.
Another words you don't need the other ones to play it,if you have the other ones you just add the key to your account. If you do only get one then nightfall would be the best as you can have heros to help you quest, there much better than the standard bots you can pick. Last edited by T@F: 05-17-2012 at 05:12 PM. |

Standalone expansion is when the expansion content does not interact with the vanilla content, like the Gothic expansions.
It's a campaign. It's not a separate game, because it's just part of the whole game. And it's not an expansion, because you don't need a base content to play it. So they decided to call it a campaigns. Campaigns have starting areas and can be played without having any other content of the game, but they are still way better and more enjoyable if you haver all of the content unlocked. |

Quote:
(expansion i mean by expanding your account with a new campaign chapter) There all classed as Campaigns otherwise they would not be standalone. besides eye of the north of course that's just an expansion. |

In order to find out, you should look at your License for the game. It will tell you whether the copy of Guild Wars you have is only the first Guild Wars (also called Guild Wars: Prophecies), or the Guild Wars Trilogy.
