Unbeatable red alien commander

Just starting out and I keep getting slaughtered by a "shielded" red alien commander who is level 4. Nothing fazes it, not grenades, bolts, or even an airstrike (Justice). Must be a powerful shield. How do I beat this thing?

You need to equip the Gizmo and shoot at him until the shield is gone, then you can beat the crap out of him with any other weapon.

Ah damn, that's right. I shut off the game before and forgot about it when I started up again. Thanks and repped.
