Ice World bug preventing progress

I'm having an insurmountable problem with the ice crystal not creating a laser at the very start of the Ice World.

It didn't take long to suss out what needed doing. It seemed like a nice and straight forward introductory version of the puzzle element I assume to be pretty common in the Ice World;
Put crystal in shining hole, creates a laser, direct laser to what needs destroying.

But I've been trying to slot this crystal into this hole for a solid 15/20 minutes, I've tried all 3 of the crystals that spawn, both ends of all of them, and I can't stop them slumping down and failing to create the laser needed. -->Picture of what is happening.<--

I damn well know the first reply will be "Jostle it around some, it'll fit eventually", to which I reply that that is exactly what I've been doing and not one thing has helped. I've tried jostling, I've tried holding it in place, I've even tried propping the crystal up with the ship but there's not enough room for that.

I'm at a loss here. What are my options?

Your problem is very simple nothing to do with the crystals you need to get the upgraded laser weapon then aim so it reflects off the crystal into the object you need to destroy. Did you also know that the crystals reflect the light differently depending on the orientation so grab the crystals & experiment with them being picked up in a different position (top or bottom) as the crystals have different light reflection properties............

Ok, I'll be be "that" guy. Jostle it around some... it's the beginning of that area and that particular puzzle is designed to teach you the concept of using crystals to project or reflect laser beams. The yellow crystal provided to you, IS supposed to go into that other slot with the yellow glow (a hint that says, hey, put a yellow crystal here). Why is it not going in? It should be "locking" into place (you can still take it out later if you want). If none of this helps, try seeing if there are any uploaded videos on youtube or some such.

Also, disregard Alienware Gamer's comment; you won't get the upgraded laser weapon until at the end of Ice World - so, doesn't much help you at the beginning, now does it.

Hopefully you've gotten past that now. There really isn't any trick to it. I just replayed that area today. I tried placing the crystal in the hole, and just dropping it from above, and as long as I was anywhere close, the crystal went in and I got the laser. I don't know why you were having so much trouble.

Youtube was the first place I looked for a guide and I'm doing it just the same as everyone else

Game doesn't even boot now. Thinks there is another instance of it running (there isn't).

Think I'm finished with this. Waste of £12.

I'm having a somewhat similar issue much further on in the Ice World. Basically, I've got the laser weapon, I'm at the red crystal, and it's not reacting to anything I'm doing. I've gotten the big blue crystal above shooting it's beam down at it, but no crystal I try to stick in the red crystal's hole will fit, they just slide right off without coming even close.

I've tried using my laser in various ways, including shooing the little crystal that's sticking out the side of the big one. Nothing happens except it glows a bit. What am I doing wrong?

There's a large red crystal shard that goes in the top. You need to backtrack a bit from that large red crystal, and go up. Above that main passage, there's an ice covered crystal where you have to break the ice with a rocket. The red shard is past that crystal.

Sorry to hear that. If the game has stopped running, my first suggestion would be the standard - Right-click on the game, select Properties and "verify integrity". Maybe something has gotten corrupted. The good news - Sort of - is that maybe that also explains the problem you were having with the crystal.
