gothic 4 thoughts

i never played any gothic before but i tried out all the demos and couldn't get into gothic 2's controls so i skipped 1 and 2..played 3's demo and it felt really unpolished (since it was a demo without community patch i'll forgive it)

BUT..somehow, gothic 4, despite bad reviews, the demo was quite good, i loved the graphics and the cheesy storyline and it makes me remember ultima 9 when i walk through the mountains and green grasses and trees...however i must say, gothic 4 is like a super easy game made for modern gamers who can't take up any challenges...but i played till the end though..although i was expected 40 hours i got only around 20 hours.

AND THEN the fall of setarrif...gosh....stay away at all cost...it's not even a game!! 3 hours and i'm done with it??? wtf?? i didn't even really get to explore the island or anything..just went straight to the demon after battling wolfs in the beginning...this is insane!! Please, spellbound, or jowood....it's pretty obvious this game was super rushed out just to make some money. There's even traders scattered throughout the castle ruins...what's that saying? not even villages or farms for me to talk to ppl properly? This expansion really doesn't have what the original gothic 4 had...sense of exploration.

I'm sorry, i don't usually post game reviews. But i'm talking about this because if there ever was a gothic 5, please take the time to make the game a balanced pace, with good exploration, storyline, more than 20 hours of gameplay and make it epic!!

the problem here is, gothic 4 is made by a completely different company, with a completely different team of devs. Its not a gothic game. Gothic 3 was the best in terms of balance concerning character building, story, setting, exploration, lore, and graphics.

Arcania is a very good -

action/adventure RPG lite game...

If you just pretend that the Gothic 4 part never arrived in the title, then you have a pretty decent action/adventure game...

So, let's just pretend from now on that the name of the game is just - Arcania - and that the genre is more action/adventure, with very lite RPG elements...

I am currently level 26, and going on 40 hours of playtime - over the span of a month or so...

I really enjoy the combat and the graphics, and the flow/exploration as you reveal each of the map locations, is pretty satisfying...

This is most certainly not a deep Gothic RPG game... So, to partially "shield" yourself from too much dissapointment - try and refer to the game as "Arcania - The Action Adventure"...

And I thought you were just pulling our legs...

(Who would have thought - now if we could only change the name in our game libraries, then we could finally be at peace and be content as to what the game actually is, and what it has to offer)...

I would say ArcaniA is a decent game; took me about 25 hours and I had a lot of fun with it.

I am currently playing Risen 1 [35 into it, made by Piranha Bytes] and I can now see how and why PB Gothic games are superior to ArcaniA. Yes, Risen is a lot of fun [persuaded me to go out and by the Gothic Universe Bundle]; but my stance that ArcaniA is a decent game still stands.

As to the OP, if they [Piranha Bytes] make a Gothic 5, it will not be made by the developer nor Publisher of ArcaniA as they have since gone bellyup.

Risen is a proper RPG, with it's own groove... Haven't picked up Risen 2 yet...

wow..seriously..even the image of the game does not have a gothic 4 name on it!!

well yes i actually know it's not made by the same devs for the previous gothic series..but maybe it was made to be more accessible for newcomers. I think the art direction was superb though..(minus the 4-5 npc faces only throughout the game).

im actually waiting for risen to go on sale..tried the demo and i guess piranabytes are better at it although the graphics doesn't look as good as arcania.

anyways...enjoying skyrim right now...seems to be the best of all
at the moment. i love exploration games!!

edit : i just noticed, the in game title still have 'gothic 4' on it..should have asked some artist to remove it as well

Gothic 3 FTW. Load it up with the latest community patch and get into it, learn the combat, it's so good I played it twice!, and it's along game.
Arcania felt like an unfinished game, so much cut out, I mean the props were there, the forge, but nothing was active.
The combat was pretty good but overall, not a deep game.

Arcania was an alright game. It was pretty much a bastardization of the franchise, and it's only real strength was its graphics. If you can get it on the cheap you might enjoy it.

While Arcania has less exploration and RPG elements, its not an "on-rails" action/adventure game. There is still and open world to explore, its just not as big.

Really, the entire Gothic series and Risen require one to look past numerous flaws to find the goodness with in. Arcania isn't as bad as many claim it to be. It might not live up to the rest of the series, but it certainly doesn't fall short of them either.

The stigma around Arcania hasn't helped, but despite that its a so-so game much like the rest. If you can look past its flaws there is an okay game in there.

Gothic4 Expansion was terrible.

The graphic's and sites were kinda of alright, the combat system is great, it's one of the things I enjoyed the most about gothic4
But yeah, Gothic4 became kinda linear and the core of series got striped from it. But still the game was ok.

Gothic3 was kinda great, but I think it had way too many sites. It was huge! The combat system sucked and performance and load times was painful. In reality gothic3 was not the successor of the Gothic 1 and 2. Gothic 4 didn't the job either. Maybe with Gothic 5!

Nothing beats the first 2 games in most of these points.
