This may be the exact opposite of what you want, but is there any way to change the sounds to how it was before the new "Web 2.0" STEAM?
I agree completely. They are way too quiet. Need the ability to change the volume up or down.

You are officially a legend. Thank you, been trying for ages to replace the awful new-message sound with something that didn't sound like a wet fish being slapped across a Casiotone keyboard :-D

+rep to you

I used this method and replaced the chat sound with Scout's "BONK!"

The hellish sound startled me in Amnesia, though.

I've just finished making custom sounds. These are softer / sci-fi like sounds.

I cannot support these, or help you out if it causes your pc to explode or whatever. But they are just .wav files, so if you're a risk taker, give em a shot.

Let me know what you think.

Would there be anyway to edit it so that I could say, create a list of sounds for friend_online and have Steam randomly pick a unique sound each time? I'm sick of hearing the same sound and don't want to change it so often. I would love this.

For anyone wondering

Deses's method doesn't work anymore. Whenever you (re)start steam your modified message.wav will be renamed to message.wav.old. Even if you've set the permissions of the message.wav file to Read only.

Bump. The current sounds are terrible, need an option to change them or just bring back the old ones.

Great idea, if there was to change that sound then it would be great because personally I don't like the default sound it makes when you receive a message.
