And how exactly does one exclude the other?

Never heard of an independently developed visual novel, I take it then?

He's right in that they need to add the VN tag to steam. I hear Cherry Tree High Comedy Club is another VN that's coming sometime this year; "Analogue" has made me rethink my stance on these, so it would be nice to be able to filter searches for them.

Cherry Tree High Comedy Club is another VN

I would describe that one as more dating simulator as opposed to visual novel.

Someone remember the text adventures back in the 80s/90s?

You may not have noticed this, but Steam's genre tags are woefully inadequate in general. Everything is filed under only the broadest possible descriptions. Steam needs dozens more tags added, not just one for visual novels.

Do they, though? I mean, how many visual novels does Steam offer? There's Analogue which very broadly fits into the genre... and there's this supposedly upcoming Cherry Tree which indeed seems to be more of a dating sim.

Doesn't seem very worthwhile to me to add a whole new tag just for two items which only loosely classify as visual novels anyway.

That would make more sense.

Absolutely no reason to over complicate a system. In this case though, this game fits perfectly fine under Indie. Creating a tag just for a single game seems a bit ridiculous no?
