What are some of the more popular mods?

I want to get back into the modding scene, seeing as there have been no good retail multiplayer games (IMO) recently. I don't want to install all the old great ones I used to play just to find out they have no servers, though. So what are some mods that people actually play regularly?

At least the Steam delivered mods you can easily check yourself - they can be selected in the Steam server browser, no matter if they are installed or not.

Servers with players on them right now, with free games (not mods) in parentheses:

(Team Fortress 2: 1000+)
(America's Army 3: 37)
Zombie Panic Source: 33
(Alien Swarm: 18)
Insurgency: 16
Synergy: 16
Pirates Vikings & Knights II: 9
Age of Chivalry: 8
(Moonbase Alpha: 7)
Dystopia: 3
DIPRIP: 1
Empires: 1
Smashball: 1
Eternal Silence: 0

You can also try Sven Co-op, it's a Half Life mod but usually has a couple servers with people on it (particularly this one server with a grappling hook mod that ALWAYS seems to have people on it).

For HL1 I did a count last year, plus a small archive that makes the HL1 mods available in the Steam server browser without installing. http://forums.steampowered.com/forum...4#post22988864

Online players

click on "All" (top left) and you see online players for some mods, until December. Sadly by then I needed the server for some other stuff and stopped recording completely for a while. Restarted in February, but only for Empires and Eternal Silence . . . if anybody is interested in more data, I might change some stuff in the script (proper threading, lower check-frequence).

Fortress Forever has a pretty active pickup community that plays multiple pickups every evening.

We have a couple pretty active pub servers as well that tend to start getting busy between 3:30-7:00 EST.

Think TFC-inspired in the Source engine, 100% free.
